Popular Nigeria singer, Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, popularly known by his stage name D’banj has been on the news for a rather unsettling reason.
The singer who has been accused of rape by one Babatayo Seyitan is now having it tough as Heritage Bank has allegedly suspended his endorsement deal.
This new development takes after the heels of a series of reactions on social media on the rape scandal where D’Banj was slammed by angry Nigerians for reportedly arresting his accuser and intimidating her.
Responding to an outcry on the rape issue, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu, ordered a probe into the rape case.
Also, a lawyer to Miss Babatayo Seyitan, Mr. Tommy Ojoge-Daniel petitioned the police calling for an investigation of the case.
On the singer’s 40th birthday, he announced that he signed an N45m endorsement deal with Heritage Bank.
However, considering the turn of events surrounding the singer, Heritage Bank has put on hold the endorsement deal indicating they don’t want to be drawn into the matter.
A few weeks ago, the embattled singer denied the rape allegation after a Nigerian model scout, Benjamin Ese who is a friend to the accuser, reported that Dbanj raped his friend, Babatayo Seyitan on December 31, 2018, in Glee Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The singer went ahead to demand an N100m compensation and a public apology published in four dailies.
The entire social media sphere went frenzy because to them, they believe D’banj allegedly rape the lady (Babatayo Seyitan) and he was trying to use his connection to clear out the whole situation.
This issue made some twitter users create a change.org online petition against the Nigerian singer D’banj, some of the users didn’t really think things have to go that way because they suggest the lady that was allegedly Raped was depressed and frustrated. This petition which has been signed by over 15,000 people was to seek The United Nations action against the singer.
The petition clearly stated that they want the UN to remove the Nigerian singer as their youth ambassador because he wasn’t fit for the position and they want the United Nation and also Heritage Bank to remove him as fast as possible as their respective ambassadors.
Change.org is a website that was created to empower people from all over the country and the world at large, to create the change they want to see.” Popular topics of Change.org petitions range from economic and criminal justice, human rights, education, environmental protection, animal rights, health, and sustainable food.
Drumhour recalls that last month, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 22-year-old microbiology student of the University of Benin was raped and killed inside a Redeem Christian Church of God, RCCG, where she went in to read.
The ugly incident sparked a public outcry with many calling for justice and a review of the legislation against rape.
Also, a number of women including celebrities revealed they were also victims of rape. Among this woman, Babatayo Seyitan spoke out too, accusing D’banj of raping her in 2018.
Well, the whole matter has polarised the social media community with both sides calling for justice to prevail.
